Violinist Kevin Jang was born in the Philadelphia area where he studied at the Settlement Music School under Lee Snyder. He also studied at Temple University’s Center for Gifted Young Musicians with Choong-Jin Chang. He continued his studies at the Peabody Institute of Music under the tutelage of Herbert Greenberg where he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. While at Peabody, Dr. Jang often served as concertmaster and was twice awarded the J.C. Hulsteyn Prize for Strings. He later attended the Catholic University of America where he received a full scholarship and earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree. While at Catholic, he worked as a graduate teaching assistant helping undergraduates with orchestral performance.
Dr. Jang has performed as soloist at the Aspen and Casacade Music Festivals, and with the Catholic University Symphony and the Trinity Chamber Orchestra of D.C. He has also appeared as guest concertmaster of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra among other DC freelance groups. He has performed chamber music at the Kent/Blossom Festival, where he was awarded the Joseph Gingold Award, the Deer Valley Music Festival, and Strathmore’s Mansion’s Artist–in–Residence series in Bethesda, Maryland.
He has worked closely with many distinguished musicians such as violinists Naoko Tanaka, Yumi Ninomiya Scott, David Updegraff, Jody Gatwood, and Joseph Scheer. He as also worked with members of Cleveland, Muir, Miro, Brentano, and Mendelssohn String Quartets. Dr. Jang has performed under the batons of David Zinman, Alan Gilbert, Leonard Slatkin, James Conlon, and Marin Alsop.
Dr. Jang is currently based in Maryland and serves as an Adjunct Professorial Lecturer at American University in DC and faculty member at the Washington Conservatory of Music. He also maintains a private studio. Dr. Jang is also a high level tennis player and currently works as a tennis pro at Manor Country Club in Rockville. He has also coached at the Bethesda Tennis Academy and Eurostar Tennis Academy in Annapolis.
